PARABENS - Why the Concern?

Parabens are the most common synthetic preservative used in the cosmetic and person care industry. The groups can be found as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isopropylparaben, and butylparaben. They are extremely effective in extending shelf life by prohibiting the grown of fungi and bacteria in the products they are used in. They have been used for decades and have been deemed safe by the FDA for use as a preservative. The use of preservatives is a cautionary measure in order to protect the consumer. Under certain conditions a product which has not been adequately preserved may become contaminated. This would expose the consumer to potentially harmful bacteria. The FDA therefore requires some type of preservative be used in the production of all personal care and cosmetic manufacturing.

Recently the use of parabens has become a concern. Because parabens act as an estrogen mimicker it is believed that they disrupt the endocrine system. Studies have shown that it would take and extremely high amount of the parabens to cause an ill effect, much more than what is currently being used. What had not been studied is how over time the build up of these parabens can reach a dangerous level.

There have been studies which show biopsied breast tissue to contain a significant amount of parabens. That alone should cause concern to the possible long term effects of parabens. The skin is the largest organ of the body. Daily use over this large of an area will most likely affect the body as it continues to absorb these parabens over time. Leave on products should be the first concern as they allow more time for the parabens to migrate into the bloodstream via the skin. There has not been enough research to prove or refute this. Why take a chance? Choose Paraben Free Products for all your skin care needs.
